Mary McLeod was the 15th of 17 children born into her family. She was the first free-born child. Her parents expected great things from her. She had a dream to build a school for girls. With determination and the help of many people she built a school. Later it merged with a school for boys and the college was called Bethune-Cookman College. President Franklin D. Roosevelt appointed her to positions of power in Washington. She left a rich legacy when she died.
