Michael Faraday in the early 1800's was apprenticed to a bookbinder, but he wanted to become a scientist and philosopher. He studied diligently and became a laboratory assistant at the Royal Institution of Great Britain. In his lifetime he invented the first electric motor. He identified benzene and also paved the way for the modern use of electrolysis. A scientific term the "faraday" is named for him. In his later years his memory failed and he was not able to experiment any further.
