Jack Kilby, when working for Texas Instruments in 1958, invented an integrated circuit which was so small it would fit on the tip of your finger. It was less than a quarter of an inch in diameter. This small chip has revolutionized the world making possible such things as the personal computer, hand-held calculators, cell phones, digital watches, and space travel. Kilby was an humble man and glad to share the honors with Robert Noyce in California who came up with the same idea at the same time. Kilby received more than 60 patents for his inventions. He received the Nobel Prize in Physics in the year 2000. When he went to receive awards he took his family and friends with him to share in the events.
