Nelson Mandela lived in South Africa. The country was ruled by the whites which were the minority group. The Africans did not have rights and were treated badly. Mandela and others protested the treatment. Many of them went to prison because they were trying to bring about changes. Nelson Mandela was sentenced to life in prison. The prisoners were mistreated and had to crush rocks into gravel. He spent 10,000 days in prison - 27 years. The President F.W. de Klerk set him free. Elections were held and Mandela became President of South Africa. He united the country and helped the people learn how to work together.
