Martin Van Buren was the 8th President of the United States. His family descended from Dutch ancestors and they spoke Dutch at home. He was born Kinderhook, New York. When he finished school he apprenticed as a lawyer. He was later elected as a senator of New York and also served as attorney general. His wife Hannah died at a young age and left him to raise four young sons. He was vice-president to President Andrew Jackson and was later elected President of the United States. Slavery was a large issue at that time. After his term was over he tried unsuccessfully three times to be re-elected. He retired to his estate in New York called Lindenwald.
