Margaret Thatcher was the first woman to serve as Prime Minister of Great Britain. She attended Oxford and then worked as a chemist. She had been interested in politics from the time she was a child. After she and Denis Thatcher married, she became a lawyer and as a Conservative she became a Member of Parliament in 1959. When she became Prime Minister she was called the Iron Lady because of the stand she took for her beliefs. When Argentina invaded the Falkland Islands a short war ensued and the British regained the islands. Because of her policies she was highly regarded by some and bitterly hated by other people. She was a friend of Ronald Reagan a conservative President of the United States.
