The colony of Massachusetts made large cents and half cents dated 1787 and 1788. This copper large cent was minted in 1787 and made at the mint in Boston.

Several dies were made. This is the Ryder 2b-A variety, commonly known as the "Horned Eagle" variety because of the die crack over the eagle's face on the reverse.

The Massachusetts colony was named after the "Massachusett" tribe of Native Americans who lived in the area before Europeans arrived. The theme chosen for the obverse may be related.
