  César Chávez was born into a Mexican American family. His grandfather had come to the United States in the 1880's. The couple had 14 children, so they had a lot of help on the ranch. César's parents and grandparents taught him to love God and to respect and help others. He quit school after eighth grade to help support the family. When he grew up he joined the Navy. After the war he married Helen and they raised a family. He organized the farm workers and helped to get better working and living conditions for them. When he died more than 30,000 people attended his funeral. After his death many honors were given to him for the work he accomplished.
