Phillis Wheatley was brought to America as a slave when she was a small child. The Wheatley family bought her in Boston and raised her as their own child. She was tutored by Mary Wheatley in astronomy, history, Latin, the Bible, and classic literature. Phillis became a poet and wrote poems about people and events during the time of the American Revolution. She wrote a poem about General George Washington and was even invited to meet with him. She became famous, but at the end of her life she died in poverty.
