In the 1940's the nations of the world were at war. It was called World War II. The war ended when the United States dropped atomic bombs on Japan on the cities of Hiroshima and Nagasaki. Sadako Sasaki was two years old at the time. As a result of the blast she developed a kind of cancer called leukemia when she was in the sixth grade. Her friend told her she would get better if she folded a thousand paper cranes. She folded the cranes, but she died. They built a memorial to her to remind people that we need to live in peace and not go to war. People still fold the paper cranes today.
