Mary Ludwig was born in the 1700's. When she was 15 she worked as a domestic helper. She met John Hays, a barber, who would become her husband. When the Revolutionary War started John became a soldier. Mary (Molly) rode many miles on horseback to go to the battlefront to see him. It was hot and the soldiers were thirsty. Molly carried water to them in a pitcher. When her husband was wounded she took over the firing of his cannon and helped to win the battle at Monmouth. General George Washington praised her efforts. Later the Pennsylvania Legislature awarded her an annuity for her service. When she became old she rescued some children from a quarry into which they had fallen.
