Malala was a young girl living in Pakistan. She attended her father's school in Mingora in the Swat valley. A militant group called the Taliban had seized power in her country. They were an Islamic extremist group who did not want the girls going to school. They destroyed the schools and persecuted people who did not follow the rules of the sharia law they had put in place. They made the men grow long beards and told the women they must wear burqas which were garments that covered the whole body with only a grille to look out through. They did not want people to laugh and they would not let the children play games. Malala and her father spoke out against them. The terrorists attacked her and shot her in the head. She did not die, but she was badly hurt. When she recovered she still was brave and continued to speak out for justice.
