In an aftershock of an earthquake the young boy Ansel Adams, then four years old, was tossed around and his nose was broken. Ansel was homeschooled by his father and his Aunt Mary until he was nine years old. He went to school for a while then his father hired tutors for him. Ansel became interested in the piano, taught himself to play. He decided to become a concert pianist. Then his parents gave him a box camera before they made a trip to Yosemite. He loved photography and wanted to become a photographer. He especially liked to make black and white prints of his pictures. He spent many days alone in the wilderness taking pictures. Sometimes it would take him all day to print a picture. He wanted it to be just right. His pictures became famous. In 1980 President Jimmy Carter awarded him the Presidential Medal of Freedom which is the nation's highest honor given to a civilian. After his death Congress set aside land and called it the "Ansel Adams Wilderness".
