Mercy Will Rain Down
Written by Elton Smith
When I go for a walk each day, I invariably encounter homeless people on the streets of Portland. They often have a dog as their companion. In Matthew 8:20, a teacher of Jewish law offered to follow Jesus wherever he went. Jesus responded that he was homeless and had no place to lay his head. - August 2025
(Verse 1)
Mercy my dog gets in fights each day
When I'm around he always wants to play
If we only had a yard it would be so schway
Lord, can you bring me some hope today
(Chorus)
I’m talkin’ ‘bout hope
That will lift you from the ground
I’m talkin’ ‘bout hope
That will turn your life around
I’m talkin’ ‘bout rest for the weary
When no hope is found
Call out His name mercy will rain down
Call out His name mercy will rain down
(Bridge)
Walk through a field, kick a can along the street
Just an ounce of dignity would be so sweet
But here I am, no water, power or phone
And Mercy he doesn’t even have a bone
The mystery of life is that we find our way
You give us a home and we forget to stay
I want to give up but then I stop and pray
I find some hope
(Guitar solo?)
(Verse 2)
Life is so hard on the streets each day
Far beyond this world I long to stay
I stop into a church I pass along the way
Lord can you bring me some hope today
(Repeat Chorus)
I’m talkin’ ‘bout hope
That will lift you from the ground
I’m talkin’ ‘bout hope
That will turn your life around
I’m talkin’ ‘bout rest for the weary
When no hope is found
Call out His name mercy will rain down
Call out His name mercy will rain down
Call out His name mercy will rain down
